What are cookies?
Cookies are data files stored by websites on your computer. In some browsers, each cookie is stored as a separate file, while in others (e.g., Firefox), all cookies are stored in a single file located in the profile folder.
Cookies typically store preferences such as login status, default language, or location. When you revisit the website, your browser sends these cookies back, allowing the site to recognize you and provide personalized content accordingly.
Cookies can store a wide variety of data, including personally identifiable information (such as name, address, email, or phone number), but only if you have provided it voluntarily. Websites cannot access files stored on your computer, nor can they obtain information you did not share.
By default, cookie operations are invisible to users. However, browsers like Firefox allow you to approve, block, or delete cookies, including automatic deletion when the browser is closed.
Types of Cookies and Their Functions:
- Session Cookies (Essential Cookies): Required for basic site navigation and functionality. These only exist during your browsing session and are deleted once you close your browser.
- Functionality Cookies: Store information such as usernames and passwords (if requested by the user), enhancing convenience and user experience. For example, saved order data allows returning users to skip re-entering billing/shipping details.
- Advertising Cookies: Tailor advertisements to your interests. You’ve likely experienced this — after viewing a product on a website, ads for it follow you around. These cookies make your browsing more efficient by showing relevant offers (e.g., saving your search for travel dates and destinations).
- Performance Cookies: Gather anonymous usage statistics to improve the site. They do not identify users by name, location, age, or profession, but help optimize user interface and content. For instance, determining if a label is clearly visible or in the right location.
